Cannes Film Festival 2022 officially started on May 17. The opening ceremony of the 75th edition of the festival was an emotional one and obtained a pinnacle. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared in front of the public via his video to address the audience of Palais live from the city of Kyiv.
President Referred to Charlie Chaplin in the Speech
During the speech at Cannes Film Festival 2022, Zelensky referred to The Great Dictator played by Charlie Chaplin, and the role of the movie in denouncing Hitler at the time of World War II. According to him, although the film did not spoil the quality of the real dictator, it highlights many aspects to become an inspirational movie.
Highlights of the Russia-Ukraine War
The President continued his speech by highlighting the incident of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. He said at Cannes Film Festival 2022that Russia started a war against Ukraine on February 24 to rule the major part of Europe. About hundreds of people died daily. Zelensky emotionally asked, “Will cinema will highlight the losses of lives and properties caused due to the Russia-Ukraine war or it will stay silent. We need another Charlie Chaplin to prove that the cinema based on the latest war is not silent.”

President Hopes for the End of Dictatorship 
Ukraine’s President Zelensky also commented, “I am saying to everyone who follows my words. I request you to avoid despairing, as dictatorship will end and hatred will eventually disappear. We have to win the hearts of people and need a cinema to highlight the climax by taking the side of freedom always.”
