You might have heard of something called No-Shave November, but you might not know how it started or the meaning behind it. During the month of November, participants are asked to put down the beard trimmer and go a whole month without shaving to raise awareness for cancer. The No-Shave November organization was started in 2009, and they’ve partnered up with multiple cancer foundations, including the American Cancer Society, the Prevent Cancer Foundation, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

No-Shave November is important because it brings something that needs more awareness to the forefront. Men’s health, in particular, is a big focus during November. 24% of men are less likely to have visited the doctors within the year, which means they’re not giving enough attention to their health. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men, with prostate cancer at the second most common. Raising awareness and raising money toward the cause helps to fight common cancers like these, as well as many others. Participants of No-Shave November start the conversation by growing out their facial hair, and everyone else can help out by donating to the cause. If you’re choosing to participate in No-Shave November this year, here are some tips on how to groom and stay sharp throughout!

Find Your Personal Style

If this is your first time growing a beard, it’s normal not to be sure how to style it. Style your facial hair with an all-natural beeswax balm, which can give your beard the hold to be styled, while also keeping it moisturized. You’ll want to style your beard to complement your hair type. If you have a full beard, you’ll want to have a full head of hair as well. Thinning hair caused by male pattern baldness might need a little bit more attention. Talk to your doctor about taking an oral hair loss prescription, like finasteride, to help ease the hair loss process and create a cohesive appearance. You’ll feel much more confident growing out your facial hair when the hair on your head looks great too.

 Remember the Cause

While growing out your facial hair and having a great beard to show off is fun, don’t forget why you’re actually doing it. It’s easy to get wrapped in the end result but it’s essential to remember the reason for the cause. No-Shave November has helped raise awareness by highlighting men’s health and cancer research, so get involved! Post on your social media about your journey and ask your friends and family to donate to cancer research. You can make an actual difference by participating.
